How do you know when it’s time to replace your mattress? It is recommended if your current mattress is five to seven years old, is starting to look a little lumpy, or if you are generally uncomfortable and not getting a good night’s sleep. Certain aches and pains could be attributed to an inadequate mattress as well. The average American will sleep for 1/3 of their lives. Make it comfortable!
Pick a size. This could be dependent on the size of your bedroom, but you may even want to consider redecorating to accommodate a bigger mattress if you are on the taller side, you do a lot of tossing and turning, or if you like to spread out. There is only a difference of five inches between the length of a double and the length of a queen, but that small amount of space could be the deciding factor in whether or not you get a restful sleep.
Know what you can spend. Mattress prices range from just a few hundred dollars to almost ten grand. Have a number in your head before you fall in love with a bed that costs as much as a down payment on a house!
Go to the store. This above all else is probably the most important step. In fact, you could almost ignore the first two and choose only to follow this rule. According to consumer reports, far more customers who buy mattresses online end up returning than those who purchase in a store. It makes sense. You wouldn’t want to buy a car without test driving it and taking a look under the hood first. To know which mattress you want to sleep on for the next several years requires feeling it out in person.
The rest of the criteria are incredibly subjective. Some people prefer the old innerspring-style mattress while others like the body-forming memory foam. Generally, it is a matter of firmness. It was once thought that firmer mattresses were better on the back, but a study done in 2003 showed that medium firmness was best for people with lower back pain. But it’s really one of those things that are unique to each person. So don’t be afraid to don some comfy clothes, head to the nearest mattress store, and give those babies a whirl. Spend about fifteen minutes on each. You’ll be as sure as the princess with the pea when you’ve found the right one.
